This year, the Slippery Rock Area High School Rock’n-ettes have been keeping themselves busy. The group is a part of the marching band, and perform in both community parades and during football games at half time. The co-captains of this year’s Rock’n-ette Team are senior Maya Borland and junior Ashley Rodgers.

The Rock’n-ettes mainly use big flag poles, but they also use their dancing abilities, chain flags, rifles, and sabres, even though sabres have not been used in a show in awhile, according to sophomore Devin Eakin.

During this year’s half time show, the Rock’n-ettes performed to four songs including “Mr. Roboto,” “The Best of Times,” “AD 1928,” and “Too Much Time on My Hands” all originally perfomed by Styx. In “Mr. Roboto,” Ashley Rodgers had a dance solo and the rest of the squad danced and did flag work. After “Mr. Roboto,” the band performed “Ad 1928.” The Rock’n-ettes used small swing flags while Maya French had a feature. During the third song, “Too Much Time on My Hands,” the entire squad used rifle for the first time in ten years. In the last song, “The Best of Times,” Ashley Rodgers had a chainflag feature and Morgan Waag had a flag feature at the end of the song.

Rodgers says, “The girls are really trying their hardest this year, and they have really learned to embrace the marching band music and have a great time.”

The 2017 Rock’n-ette team consists of 21 high school students, representing grades 9-12.

According to junior Mekenzie Pfluger, another Rock’n-ette, “Even though we disagree we come back stronger as a team.”

In addition to performing at football games, the Rock’n-ettes have participated in other marching band events such as the Clarion Autumn Leaf Parade (October 7) , the SRU homecoming parade (October 14) , and the Grove City Marching Band Invitational (October 14.)
